December Dates

Thank you, Nashville Lifestyles Magazine, for publishing an excerpt from A SEASON OF DARKNESS in the December issue.  It will be out December 1. Anyone interested in an early look at Chapters 1 and 2, pick up a copy of the magazine when it comes out.

A SEASON OF DARKNESS will be released December 7.  The book should be available at bookstores and on Amazon.com on that date.

Our first signing is December 8, 7:00, at Borders West End. Two other signings are scheduled with our friends at Mysteries & More on December 11, 2:00,  and Sherlock’s Downtown, December 17, 11:00.

Thanks to all who are keeping up with these dates and passing the word to others!

Read “A Fond Farewell to Davis-Kidd”

In her examiner.com article, Paige Crutcher has compiled comments from several Nashville authors about Davis-Kidd’s closing. Clearly, there is a lot of emotion about this.  I was in Green Hills tonight, and it is sad to see the “Store Closing” sign above the Davis-Kidd sign.

New Signing Date!

The news about Davis-Kidd’s closing sent us scrambling for a new location to launch A SEASON OF DARKNESS. We are happy that Borders West End wants us!  Our signing is scheduled for Wednesday, December 8 at 7:00. Since the release date for the book is December 7, this is perfect. Many thanks to Borders, and I hope our friends will make the bookstore glad!  It has been gratifying to get so many emails and calls asking, “What are you going to do about the signing?”  Thanks to our friend and publicist Tom Robinson for making these arrangements!

Oxford Creative Nonfiction Conference

What an exciting and invigorating weekend! Five of us from our writers group attended the Oxford Creative Nonfiction Conference at Ole Miss in Oxford: Kathy Rhodes (who was “staff” and worked very hard!), Mary Buckner, Doug Jones, Rick Romfh. We’ll have many stories from the weekend. Fun, entertaining, instructional, motivating – it was an unforgettable experience. Being with our group made it just that much better, and we made some new good friends, too.  Writers are the best!

Davis-Kidd Bookstore Closing

What sad and shocking news. Besides what Davis-Kidd has meant to readers, the bookstore has been a great friend to writers.  The signing for A SEASON OF DARKNESS that was to be held on Dec. 9 is cancelled.  More later about another location and perhaps another date to launch the book.

Advance Copies Arrive!

I’m looking at my advance copy of A SEASON OF DARKNESS.  Though I’ve read the manuscript so many times I think I can recite it, it’s only now, as I’m holding the finished product in my hand, that it finally feels like a real book – and I am suddenly aware of what a heavy thing it is to write about this tragic and well-known murder mystery.  I think the book will bring back a lot of memories for a lot of Nashvillians.  It is my hope – and Doug’s, too, I know – that the story we have written will be well-received by those close to Marcia Trimble’s family and neighbors.

We will launch the book on December 9 at 7:00 at Davis-Kidd Booksellers in Green Hills.

Writers Group Celebrates Halloween

Every year our writers group celebrates Halloween in a big way.  This year was the best! We all wrote and read Halloween stories, and we all came in costume. Farmer Jones took photos and wanted them posted, but, of course, he was the only one who was not in the photos.  Besides Farmer Jones, we had a witch, a Harley babe, a guy from the UAW, Sonny from Miami Vice, the Black Widow, and Morticia.  Missing (in Ireland, poor thing!) was Rita, who will have to make it up to us next year.

One More Save the Date – 12/17/10

The third booksigning scheduled to celebrate the release of A Season of Darkness is on December 17, 11:00-1:00, at Sherlock’s Bookstore in Downtown Nashville. If you work in the downtown area, this might be a nice diversion at lunch time. Drop by and say hello to Doug and me.

Homesick After SFB

Someone – one of those wonderful “former” members of the Nashville Writers Alliance who came back to attend our panel at the Southern Festival of Books – expressed the feeling about leaving everyone after the weekend.  He said he was homesick. I think it was Mike Coleman, but we all felt it, not just those of you who came to Nashville for our gathering and then went home.  The weekend was a time for reminiscing and sharing and connecting in a way that is hard to explain to anyone who has not been part of our writers group.  The e-mails that have been flying back and forth keep saying the same thing: This was a group that has been hard for any of us to replicate in any other part of our lives.

So even though I am still in Nashville and am still a part of the writers group, and I love all the members who still meet every Tuesday night, I am homesick for the “old” members, too.  (I’ll get in big trouble for that particular adjective.) The good news is that our present members have a special bond, too. I would not know what to do with myself on Tuesday nights if I couldn’t go to writers group.

Save Another Date – 12/11/10

Another signing for A Season of Darkness is scheduled for Saturday, December 11, at Mysteries & More from 2 to 4 p.m. Please put this date on your calendar. Mysteries & More is a charming neighborhood bookstore in the Lennox Village community of Nashville. Hope to see you there!
